Is it warm where you are? Whatever the weather, these dates will remind you that, heck yeah, summer is here. Let’s get to it!
1. Last-Day-of-School Movie
You don’t need to be a student to kick summer off at your local theater. Identify the biggest action movie available (this year it’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning) and catch a matinee. Summer doesn’t start until you’ve heard Tom Cruise say, “It’s only pain.”
2. Nap on the Veranda
I just checked: rest assured, napping is indeed a certified summer activity.
Pick your favorite setting, and bring a blankie. Maybe your spot is a classic hammock, the sofa on a screened-in porch, a poolside lawn chair, or simply a bed next to a wide-open window. Let the cares of your day-to-day drift away as you dream about butterflies and ice cream trucks. Ideally, once a week.
3. Eat the Farm
Whenever possible, devour something that was just plucked from the ground. The best candidates are tomatoes eaten like apples, but you can also count on mint sprigs in mocktails and fresh toppings at the pizza farm.
If you haven’t been to a pizza farm, I urge you to find one immediately.
4. Bring a Book Everywhere
In our continued fight against The Entity (just a casual Mission Impossible reference), armor yourself with a paper book at all times this summer. Two debut novels I’m pre-ordering are Bottom of the Breath by Jayne Mills and The Universe by Mike Matzdorff. I’d love to hear what you’re reading in the comments!
5. Indie Art Flick
Big Hollywood shouldn’t get all your entertainment dollars. When all you want is air conditioning, you can support indie filmmakers at the same time. I’m kicking myself for missing my chance to see Secret Mall Apartment at the Belcourt, but this film about friends who lived inside a mall for four years starting in 2003 might be making the rounds at a theater near you.
6. Visit Stadiums in Style
Clear-bag rules are in place for concerts and sporting events everywhere. Luckily, these policies have sprouted a cute-clear-bag cottage industry. Think ahead and avoid the long trek back to your car.

7. Plant Seeds for Fall
One should stay in the present moment during the summer months, with one exception. Pumpkin patch plans start now! I’m dreaming of being the neighborhood Pumpkin Lady, which would require ripping out some grass and planting a hella lotta pumpkin seeds in the very near future. I was inspired by this man from Seattle.
This non-exhaustive list should be enough to get you started on your summer mom dates. More to come next week… summer’s just begun!
Great summer suggestions! I’m adding Cheekwood Summer Concert Series to my list!
Reading All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker. Reading or napping outside sounds amazing! Thanks!
