The Date with the Magic Man
My thrill this week was seeing magician Stephen Bargatze dazzle a crowd of hundreds with his tricks. “How’d he do that?” was the only question to ask when the International Brotherhood of Magicians champion made playing cards, dollar bills, and jewelry vanish, then reappear minutes later from a bubble gum dispenser.
Not only can he make magic, but the man provided more laughs-per-minute to the crowd of teens and their mothers than most comedians I’ve seen. It’s almost like world-famous comedian Nate Bargatze learned everything he knows about comedic timing from this guy - his dad.
Only hours earlier, I’d been lamenting to a friend on the phone about the exhaustion of monitoring the dangers that lurk within the screens kids use every day. Seeing a roomful of kids laugh at good-natured fun in real life was refreshing and reassuring.
Bargatze took a few minutes of the show to share some of the challenges he faced growing up, including running away from home as a teenager. He spoke about finally understanding unconditional love after moving in with his aunt an uncle, and how his life changed through the care he experienced with them. His performance was powerful all-around… maybe someone with a little bit of clout [*cough* Nate Bargatze] can give this man his own special!
