I basically went back to English class this week. With a smidge of time to kill before camp pickup, I grabbed one of my teen’s school books from the pile.
The cover was dull and tattered, and I knew I was about to page through (shudder) a school textbook during a summer month. But after being treated to a slew of great short stories lately, I was curious to see what was inside.
I wasn’t disappointed. I quickly read “The Liar” by Tobias Wolff, about a boy who tells lies after the death of his father.
Once again, I was struck by the power of a short story. How can such a punch be packed in so few pages? How does the author know exactly what to leave in and what to leave out?
Have you read a short story lately? Find yourself a short story collection, or borrow one from the teen in your life. This is the kind of reading that doesn’t feel like homework.
